About us
Who we are
Doorstop Education is a California nonprofit currently applying for federal 501(c)(3) status.
Doorstop Education began three years ago as an idea. Ben Guzovsky, one of Doorstop Education’s founders and president, started a national education research project: observing high school classes in 15 states, interviewing hundreds of students and educators, and studying student agency. What do students believe they can do to improve their school experience?
No two students he met had the same specific challenges in school, but all shared the same feeling: powerlessness.
Students are the most powerful stakeholders in education. Without them, there is no school. Doorstop Education helps students realize their agency, guides them through improving their school, and teaches them self-advocacy skills in the process.
Ben has been running Doorstop Education for three years, expanding the reach of Doorstops, our online guides to help students change school. This year, thanks to expanded funding and resources, Doorstop Education is offering mentorship programs and workshops for students nationwide! Ben is a technologist and education researcher passionate about community engagement and student voice. He previously headed policy at SafetyKit, an AI Trust & Safety platform, and is currently a fellow at Assembly Code, a nonprofit building open-source educational software.
