Most people who use Doorstop just read it and never make an account or a survey. Most of these terms (sections 3 to 7) only apply if you sign in to create surveys, comment, or answer a survey that asks you to sign in.
The short version
- You can read the site and answer open surveys at any age. Accounts are for people 13 and older.
- Criticize how things work at your school all you want. Don't attack, threaten or expose people.
- What you post is yours, but we can show it on the site, and we can take it down if it breaks these rules.
- Our guides are advice, not legal advice, and we can't promise any particular result.
1. Agreeing to these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and Doorstop Education (“Doorstop,” “we”), a California nonprofit. They cover doorstopeducation.org, fix.school, and everything you can do on them. By using the site, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy, which explains what information we collect and what we do with it. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.
2. Who can use Doorstop
Anyone can read the site and answer surveys that are open to everyone. To make an account, which you need to make surveys, comment, or answer surveys that count one answer per person, you must be 13 or older. If you're under 18, check with a parent or guardian that they're okay with you using Doorstop and agreeing to these terms.
3. Your account
- Give us honest information, including your real birth month and year.
- One account per person. Don't share it, and don't sign in as someone else.
- Keep your sign-in secure. You're responsible for what happens on your account.
- You can delete your account at any time from the account menu on the surveys pages.
4. What you post
Surveys, questions, comments and anything else you post (“your content”) belong to you. By posting it, you give Doorstop permission to store it, show it on the site, and share it the way the site works: for example, showing a public survey on our surveys page and letting other students copy it to run at their own schools, or showing results to people who answer. This permission is free, worldwide, and lasts as long as your content is on the site.
You're responsible for your content. Only post things you have the right to post. GIFs picked from our GIF search come from an outside GIF library and follow its terms.
5. Rules for surveys and comments
Doorstop exists so students can raise problems and push for change. Criticizing a rule, a policy, a decision or how a school is run is welcome. These are not:
- Threats, harassment, bullying, or insults aimed at a person, whether a student, teacher or anyone else.
- Slurs, or attacking people for their race, religion, gender, sexuality, disability, or where they're from.
- Asking for or posting personal information: names, phone numbers, addresses, social media accounts, or anything that could identify who answered. Surveys must stay anonymous.
- Sexual content, or content that encourages self-harm, violence, drugs or breaking the law.
- Spam, ads, scams, or links to harmful sites.
- Pretending to be a school, teacher, Doorstop, or anyone you're not.
- Messing with results: answering more than once by getting around our limits, using bots, or making fake accounts.
- Trying to break, overload, or get into parts of the site you're not supposed to.
If someone is in danger, don't post it in a survey or comment. Tell a trusted adult, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or call 911 in an emergency. You can also tell us privately through our report form.
6. How we keep it safe
Surveys and comments are checked by an automated safety system before they go up, and anyone can report a survey or comment. We may remove content, hide it while we look at it, or suspend or close accounts that break these rules or put people at risk, with or without warning. We're not able to review everything, and we're not responsible for what other people post, but we take reports seriously.
7. Running a survey
- Be honest about who's running it. Don't present your survey as an official school survey unless your school is actually running it.
- Share results truthfully. Survey results here come from whoever chose to answer, so they show what students think, not a scientific measurement.
- Written answers are shown only to you. Keep them private, and don't try to work out who wrote what.
- You can close or delete your survey at any time. Deleting it deletes its answers and comments. If people have entered its giveaway, you can delete it once the winners are drawn.
Giveaways
- If you offer your own prize, you're promising to deliver it to the winner, and you're responsible for it. It has to be something you have and are allowed to give, and legal and appropriate for teenagers: no alcohol, vapes, weapons, or anything that breaks school rules.
- Prizes Doorstop provides only appear once we approve them, and we can decline or withdraw them before the giveaway starts.
- Entry is always free. Don't ask anyone to pay, buy something, or answer a certain way to enter. You, and people who live with you, can't win your own giveaway.
- A winner's email or phone number is for delivering the prize only. Don't share it or use it for anything else.
- Each giveaway also has its own official rules, which you and everyone who enters agree to.
8. Our content
The writing on Doorstop, including our guides and survey templates, is shared under a CC BY-SA 4.0 license: you can use and adapt it, as long as you credit us and share your version the same way. That license doesn't cover the Doorstop name and logo, images and videos from other people, or content posted by users, which belongs to them.
9. Advice, not guarantees
Our guides, templates and tools are general advice to help students speak up. They aren't legal, medical or professional advice, and we can't promise that a survey, email or campaign will change anything. You decide what to do at your school, and you're responsible for following your school's rules and the law. Links to other websites, like news stories, are there for reference; we don't control those sites.
10. The legal part
Doorstop is a free service run by a small nonprofit. We provide it “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. We don't promise the site will always work, be error-free, or keep your content forever, so keep your own copy of anything important (hosts can download their results).
To the fullest extent the law allows, Doorstop and its volunteers and staff aren't liable for indirect or consequential damages, or for anything that results from content posted by others or from how you use the site or its advice. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.
11. Copyright complaints
If you believe something on Doorstop infringes your copyright, email ben@fix.school with what it is, where it appears, and how to reach you. We'll look into it and remove material that infringes.
12. Ending
You can stop using Doorstop and delete your account at any time. We can suspend or end access for anyone who breaks these terms. Sections 4 (for content that remains on the site), 9, 10 and 13 still apply after that.
13. Changes and governing law
We may update these terms as Doorstop changes. When we do, we'll update the date at the top of this page; using the site after that means you accept the new terms. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California.
