Get your teacher to say your name right

Two steps before the first day, plus practice for the moment someone still gets it wrong.

Short answer

1. Record your name on NameDrop (free, about two minutes). 2. Email the link to your teacher before the first day, using the template below.

Correcting a teacher once feels awkward. Hearing the wrong name all year feels a lot worse.

Record your name

  1. Go to namedrop.io and make a free account.
  2. Record yourself saying your name. Start talking right when you hit record, and say it the way you want it said, at normal speed.
  3. Copy your personal link. It looks like namedrop.io/yourname.

Send it to your teacher

Send this before the first day if you can, so they hear it before they read it off the roster. Mid-year works too.

Subject: How to say my name

Hi Mr./Ms./Dr. [last name],

I’m [your name], and I’ll be in your [class] class this year. I’m looking forward to it!

My name gets mispronounced a lot, so here’s a quick recording of how to say it: [your NameDrop link]. It sounds like “[your name spelled how it sounds, like juh-MARE-ih-son].”

Thanks so much,

[your first and last name]

Put it in your email signatureOptional

Then every email you send teaches people your name, not just this one. In Gmail:

  1. Click the gear, then See all settings.
  2. On the General tab, scroll to Signature and click Create new.
  3. Write your sign-off, then highlight “how to say my name” and link it to your NameDrop link.

Thanks,
[Your name]

Practice correcting people

The email handles your teachers. Subs, coaches and the kid reading the attendance list still need a correction out loud, and that’s the hard part. Warm up here: fix every wrong version of your name, and leave alone the people who get it right.

  • Tap a wrong version of your name before it fades to correct it.
  • Leave alone anyone who says it right. Correcting them costs a life.
  • Let a wrong one slide and it sticks. Three slips and the round ends.
